Computer Software Engineering

A person who designs, tests and develops software is a Computer Software Engineer.

Computer Software Engineering is what makes our computers function. To explain this, here is a (hopefully) informative video.

Dave Lofquist, is (and has been) a computer software engineer for several companies including Anderson Consulting, and Northwest Airlines, to name a few. At Anderson Consulting he was a software consultant and at Northwest (now Delta) he helped design that automatic check-in thing that helps you bypass those long, imposing lines. Before that you had to answer questions from an agent, and an agent caould only help one person at a time.So the automatic check-in kiosk can only help one person at a time, but is much, much faster. So you can thank him and his fellow computer software engineers for saving you time (which is money!)

The Value of Computer Software Engineers

"The value of computer software engineers is in their ability to automate routine tasks and to get information to people so they can make decisions," says Dave.

Education Required

A bachelor's degree in computer science or computer engineering and experience with many types of computer technology.

Types of Computer Software Engineers

All computer software engineers do about the same thing. They ,as mentioned before, design, test, and develops software. But...an example of two different types of computer software Computer applications software engineers design, and maintain a computer program based off of what the client needs. Computer systems software engineers construct, and maintain a software program for a company. Also, they can set up a private networking system within the company for the employees to use also known as "intranet".

Work Conditions/ Salary

The average computer software engineer works in a nice, comfortable, office setting. Also they typicaly work the traditional 40 hour week, but when they have a huge deadline for a large project they might have to work weekends or late into the night. To, add, the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) reports that 17% of them work 50 hour weeks...on average. The Computer applications software engineers earn an average of $85,660 a year. The thing is though, that Computer systems software engineers earn $90,780 a year.

Outlook of Field

The outlook of the Computer Software Engineer's field is predicted to be one of the fastest growing fields mainly because, well, the computer is vital to any company and person who does business. In fact, the number of jobs should rise from about 324,000 to 1.1 million in just 7 years. That's a little over a 300% increase.
